The Boston Red Sox are in a tough spot as the MLB trade deadline creeps closer. With a 29-32 record, they’re 8 ½ games behind in the AL East and 3 ½ games away from a wild card.
The front office is still deciding whether to buy or sell. Rumors are flying about who they might deal, and the San Diego Padres have their eyes on outfielder Jarren Duran. He’s not the only Sox player who could be packing his bags, though. Let’s look at the possible trade scenarios and which names might be headed out.
Jarren Duran: A Prime Trade Candidate
Duran stands out as a top target for the Padres, who really need help in their lineup. Last season, Duran made the All-Star team and finished eighth in AL MVP voting. This year, he’s hitting .264/.312/.406 with 13 doubles, six triples, four homers, 34 RBI, 31 runs, and 13 stolen bases through 60 games.
He’s put up a 0.8 WAR in 2025, which shows his value. With team control through 2028, Duran is a tempting asset for any team looking for outfield help.
Why the Red Sox Might Trade Duran
Even though Duran’s been solid, the Red Sox might see him as expendable. Roman Anthony, a promising outfielder, is almost ready for the majors, and fans can’t wait to see the top prospect in action.
If the Sox think Duran’s 2024 season was a peak he won’t hit again, this could be the right time to move him while his value’s high.
Other Potential Trade Candidates
Duran’s getting plenty of attention, but he’s not the only Red Sox player who could be dealt if the team decides to sell.
Alex Bregman: The Big Name
Alex Bregman joined Boston on a creative three-year deal with an opt-out after this season. He’s currently injured, but before that, he was having his best year since 2019, when he finished second in MVP voting.
If Bregman gets healthy and returns to form, contenders will definitely be interested.
Pitching Staff: Valuable Arms
The Red Sox have a few pitchers who could draw interest at the deadline:
- Walker Buehler: He has a $25 million mutual option for next year. Buehler’s been up and down lately, but his playoff experience makes him appealing for teams chasing October.
- Lucas Giolito: Coming back from Tommy John surgery, Giolito has a $14 million club option for next season. He’s shown flashes of his old self, so teams looking for pitching depth might take a shot.
- Aroldis Chapman: Chapman has a 1.88 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP, with 32 strikeouts in 24 innings. He’s a free agent after the season and has a history of postseason success, so he seems like a no-brainer trade candidate.
- Liam Hendriks: Hendriks is still working his way back from Tommy John, but he’s had some strong moments. With a $12 million mutual option for next year, he could help a contender’s bullpen.
- Garrett Whitlock: Whitlock’s controlled through 2028 and can pitch in multiple roles. He’ll make $7.5 million next season, so his versatility and contract make him a pretty valuable piece.
The Red Sox’s Uncertain Future
It’s tough to say if the Red Sox should start selling just yet. Their current spot in the standings and the odds from DraftKings (+235 to make the playoffs) hint that selling might actually make sense.
The next few weeks could really shape where this team goes. If Boston chooses to sell, the players mentioned earlier might shake up the trade market in a big way.
