The transfer portal has completely shaken up how college football programs build their rosters. Teams now have a fast-track to competitiveness, thanks to strategic pickups that can fill gaps with veterans or snag young stars itching for a bigger stage.
This offseason, some programs have really separated themselves by using the portal to add talent, patch up weaknesses, and inject new life into their depth charts. From playoff hopefuls gearing up for another run to Power Four squads clawing their way back, here are the rosters that look the most improved because of the transfer portal.
Texas Tech Red Raiders: A New Era Under Joey McGuire
Texas Tech has brought in 21 new faces, including a whopping 13 four-stars, which leads the nation according to 247 Sports. Head coach Joey McGuire’s really flipped the roster, blending proven veterans with some high-upside newcomers.
Key Additions
The Red Raiders’ haul features:
- David Bailey – Former Stanford pass-rusher
- David Sampson – North Carolina offensive tackle
- Romello Height – Georgia Tech edge rusher
They’ll probably make an immediate difference, especially in the trenches. Both the offensive and defensive lines should look a lot tougher this year.
Notable Transfers
One of the splashiest pickups is former five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson. He originally committed to Texas A&M, but changed his mind and stuck with Texas Tech.
Hudson’s the highest-rated signee in program history, so expectations are sky-high. Offensive lineman Hunter Zambrano also arrives from Illinois State, bringing versatility and a bit of an edge up front. Zambrano had NFL draft buzz last year, so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the jump in competition.
Oregon Ducks: High-Impact Additions
Oregon didn’t bring in a ton of transfers—just 11—but the quality is off the charts. Head coach Dan Lanning and his staff managed to land several guys who could be early NFL draft picks someday.
Top Transfers
Big names coming in include:
- Isaiah World – Five-star Nevada transfer OT
- Dillon Thieneman – Four-star Purdue safety
World, who’s a massive 6-foot-8 and 315 pounds, should step right into the left tackle spot after Josh Conerly Jr. left for the Commanders. Thieneman already gets compared to former Duck Jevon Holland, which is saying something.
Other Key Additions
Other important transfers:
- Emmanuel Pregnon – USC transfer joining the offensive line
- Makhi Hughes – Former Tulane standout, likely RB1
- Malik Benson – Florida State wide receiver
All three should see the field early and often. The Ducks’ roster is looking stacked for the season ahead.
LSU Tigers: A Top Transfer Class
LSU hauled in 18 transfers, including 12 four-stars, and it’s hard to argue anyone did it better. This group could really help LSU make some noise in the SEC.
Headline Transfers
Leading the way:
- Patrick Payton – Florida State pass rusher
- Nic Anderson – Oklahoma wide receiver
- Barion Brown – Kentucky wide receiver
Payton’s got first-round potential and might boost his NFL stock with a big year. Anderson and Brown bring some much-needed speed and explosiveness to the wide receiver room.
Defensive and Offensive Boosts
Other major additions:
- Mansoor Delane – Virginia Tech cornerback
- Damon Wilson II – Georgia pass rusher
- Nate Johnson – Appalachian State pass-rusher
Delane and Wilson should give the defense a lift. Johnson, who’s racked up 10 sacks over the past two years, might end up being a sneaky good get.
North Carolina Tar Heels: A Massive Overhaul
The Tar Heels have basically hit the reset button with 41 new players. Bill Belichick’s at the helm, and he’s trying to blend a wild mix of new talent across every part of the team.
Defensive Reinforcements
On defense, look out for:
- Thaddeus Dixon – Washington defensive back
- Khmori House – Washington linebacker
- Pryce Yates – UConn defensive lineman
These guys bring experience and athleticism, and the hope is they’ll help shore up a defense that needed a boost.
Offensive Upgrades
On offense, the Tar Heels brought in Daniel King from Troy. He brings some much-needed athleticism to their offensive line.
They also picked up seven four-stars and 30 three-stars. Four more players landed below the three-star mark, at least according to 247 Sports.
