Akron Zips football coach Joe Moorhead recently talked about his team’s progress and obstacles after their 15th and final spring practice. The focus? Building a real identity, getting sharper in critical situations, and just moving forward bit by bit.
The Zips wrapped up their spring with a showcase at InfoCision Stadium. No official score was kept, but fans got to see touchdowns, field goals, some big tackles, and a handful of turnovers.
As the new season creeps closer, Moorhead addressed the impact of losing players and the potential he sees in both returning and fresh faces.
Spring Practice Goals and Achievements
Coach Moorhead laid out three main goals for spring:
- Develop an identity—think preparation, physicality, precision, and a bit of grit.
- Get better at situational football, especially on explosive plays, turnovers, third downs, red zone work, and special teams.
- Keep improving at every level—individuals, position groups, the whole squad.
Moorhead said the team made real strides here, though there were some off days. With about 40 scholarship players gone, thanks to graduation and transfers, he’s still upbeat about where things stand.
Key Returning Players
Three big names are back for Akron:
- Jordan Gant—1,000-yard rusher, the workhorse in the backfield.
- Marcel Williams—All-league wideout.
- Cyrus Durham—Defensive lineman who stands out.
They’ve got 82 scholarship players right now, with three more spots to fill. The opener at Wake Forest on September 3rd isn’t that far off, honestly.
Offensive Outlook
The offense has lost some key guys to graduation and the portal, which stings. Notable departures include:
- Ben Finley—quarterback, graduated.
- Israel Polk—wide receiver, transferred to Oklahoma State.
- Jake Newell—tight end, now at Toledo.
- Four linemen: Keylen Davis (Pitt), Maasai King (Iowa State), Kenneth McManus IV (Auburn), and Delvin Morris (Kansas State).
Still, over those 15 spring practices, the offense started to click. Key returners on offense include:
- Marcel Williams—all-league wide receiver, back for more.
- Jordan Gant—the main guy at running back.
- Colin Lyons—steady on the offensive line.
- Allen Jones Jr.—reliable up front as well.
- Reese Poffenbarger—new quarterback transfer from North Texas, and there’s some buzz around him.
Depth at Running Back and Wide Receiver
The running back and wide receiver groups are pretty deep—probably the most talented spots on the roster. Behind Gant, the running back room looks like this:
- Sean Patrick—was a starter before his injury, had a strong spring.
- Marquese Williams—transfer from Minnesota.
- Taven Curry—came in from UAB and Louisiana-Monroe.
At wide receiver, you’ve got Marcel Williams leading the way. Then there’s:
- Kyan Mason—got a lot of snaps last year.
- Cameron Monteiro—stepped up late in the season.
- Luke Sivon—saw a bit of action.
- Transfers: Titus Myers (Old Dominion), Miles Burris (Charlotte), and Gentz Hilburn (junior college).
Tight end isn’t thin, either. Conner Cravaack is back, joined by new faces like Elijah Alexander (junior college) and Wyatt Hook (Michigan State).
Defensive Challenges and Developments
The defense has had its share of turnover, too, but there’s progress. Key losses include:
- Bruno Dall—off to UCF.
- Julien Laventure—now at Texas Tech.
- Linebackers: Elijah Reed (Utah), Melvin Spriggs (Southern Miss), Markus Boswell (Texas), and Rich Benenge (Albany).
Up front, the defense has some strength:
- Ronald Hull—interior tackle who’s hard to move.
- Cyrus Durham—brings energy and toughness.
Position Battles and Key Players
Linebacker is wide open—no returning starters, so it’s anyone’s job right now. In the secondary, there’s competition, with these guys making noise:
- Mehki Flowers—looks sharp.
- Aamii Branch—showing up in drills.
- Terence Thomas—making plays.
- Catrell White—on the mend and working his way back.
Special teams aren’t being ignored. Matt Schramm and Aidan Stire are in a battle for kicker, and Joey Castle returns as punter. They’re still hoping to add a couple more guys to strengthen special teams, but that’s always a work in progress, right?
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season
The Zips are gearing up for their season opener against Wake Forest on September 3rd. After that, they’ll face Robert Morris, Minnesota, and UNLV.
Coach Moorhead seems pretty optimistic, even with all the roster changes and the chaos from the transfer portal. The team’s been showing some grit and growth during spring practices.
There’s a solid core of returning players this year, plus some new faces that look promising. Could this be the year Akron really puts things together?
