The Fighting Illini football program just dropped its list of team captains for the 2026 season. This year, it’s a mix—some seasoned vets and a couple of new faces that already made a splash.
Six players got the nod: Matthew Bailey, Collin Dixon, Katin Houser, Aidan Laughery, Jake Renfro, and Xavier Scott. Their teammates picked them, which says a lot about their leadership and the way they show up on the field.
No two of these guys are the same, honestly. Each brings something different, and together, they’re hoping to push Illinois football to another level this fall.
Meet the 2026 Illinois Football Team Captains
The Illini are gearing up for the new season, and at the front of the pack are these six captains. They’ve all made their mark individually and earned the trust of the locker room.
Matthew Bailey: Defensive Backbone
Matthew Bailey has basically become the heart of the Illinois defense. He’s a two-time All-Big Ten pick and, heading into 2026, he’s on Phil Steele’s Preseason All-Conference Third Team and even up for the Lott IMPACT Award.
- 185 total tackles
- 4 interceptions
- 4 forced fumbles
Bailey’s led the Illini in tackles two years running. It’s hard to imagine the defense without him out there.
Collin Dixon: Offensive Spark
Wide receiver Collin Dixon is back and, honestly, he’s the top returning receiver for Illinois. Last year, he tied for the team lead with five receiving touchdowns and landed 14th in the Big Ten.
- 35 catches
- 548 yards
- 15.7 yards per reception
Dixon’s got some preseason buzz, too—he’s on Athlon’s All-Big Ten Fourth Team for 2026.
Katin Houser: The New Signal-Caller
Quarterback Katin Houser came in as a top transfer, and the hype’s real. Between his time at Michigan State and East Carolina, he’s put up some serious numbers:
- 6,438 passing yards
- 43 passing touchdowns
- 15 rushing touchdowns
Just last season, Houser threw for 3,300 yards at a 66% clip, with 19 touchdowns and only six picks. He also ran for 193 yards and found the end zone nine more times on the ground.
Aidan Laughery: Homegrown Talent
Running back Aidan Laughery is about as local as it gets, now in his fifth year at Illinois. He leads the running backs in career numbers:
- 191 carries
- 1,061 yards
- 8 career rushing touchdowns
He kicked off last season with 101 yards and two scores against Western Illinois, then closed out with 77 yards in the Music City Bowl win over Tennessee. Not bad at all.
Jake Renfro: The Anchor
Jake Renfro holds things down at center. He transferred in with a ton of experience—38 career games, 36 starts between Cincinnati and Wisconsin.
- All-American Athletic Conference First Team
- Helped Cincinnati reach the College Football Playoff in 2021
- On the Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List two years running
Renfro’s presence in the middle is going to be huge for the line. It’s hard to overstate how much a steady center matters.
Xavier Scott: The Defensive Leader
Defensive back Xavier Scott is back after missing most of 2025 with an injury. He’s got quite the resume already:
- 127 career tackles
- 6 career interceptions
- 20 career pass breakups
Scott made the All-Big Ten First Team in 2024 and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. For 2026, he’s on Athlon’s All-Big Ten Third Team list. If he stays healthy, watch out.
Looking Ahead
The Illinois football team is gearing up for the 2026 season. The spotlight’s definitely on the six newly named captains this year.
Fans and analysts are curious—will their leadership show up in the win column? Honestly, that’s always the big question, isn’t it?
There’s a good mix of experienced players and fresh faces on the roster. It feels like the Fighting Illini could be in for a pretty interesting season.
