Among the Arizona Wildcats’ reps is sixth-year defensive lineman Tre Smith. He’s a guy who really embodies resilience, leadership, and just plain grit.
Last year was rough for Smith. The 2025 season was basically derailed by injuries, and he had to watch from the sidelines.

But he never really lost his drive. “I’ve been through an Achilles injury before, so it’s not exactly the same, but it’s just monotonous. You have to do it every day, and you don’t always feel like doing it, but it’s either that or I don’t get to play and chase my dream,” Smith said.

Now, Smith has an extra year of eligibility. It’s a chance to put on the Arizona uniform one more time.
He also gets another season with defensive line coach Joe Salave’a, which he calls a huge blessing. “It’s the best thing that could have happened for me. I’m grateful.”

“That young man there, he’s a bona fide leader,” Salave’a said. You don’t hear that every day.
His leadership isn’t just talk, either. Teammates like Leroy Palu and Julian Savaiinaea see how hard he works, calling him “Mr. Redline” because he’s always going full throttle.
“He leads by his actions, and man, his actions speak louder than his words,” Savaiinaea added. It’s clear Smith’s not just a leader—he’s the example.
The Impact of Smith’s Absence and Return
With Smith out last season, there was definitely something missing. Defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales talked about how tough it is to lead when you’re not actually playing.
“Guys that don’t play can lead from the side in certain things, but when it comes down to actually winning games, that guy better be on the field,” Gonzales said.
The Return of a Vocal Leader
So, Smith’s return means the Wildcats get back a real voice on the field. His energy and presence are expected to lift everyone up.
“Tre has done a phenomenal job,” Gonzales said. That says a lot about how much he matters to this group.
Smith’s leadership works right alongside Jay’Vion Cole in the secondary and Taye Brown at linebacker. Together, they’re kind of a leadership trio, with Smith being the “Top Cat” in the program.
