Boston College football is gearing up for a fresh start with head coach Bill O’Brien at the helm. As training camp kicks off, the team is looking to put a rough 2-10 season behind them and chase new opportunities.
There’s a mix of returning players and some intriguing transfers. The goal? Make real progress this year. Let’s dig into the biggest storylines from Day 1 of camp, from players to watch to the strategies that might finally turn things around for the Eagles.
Embracing a New Era Under Bill O’Brien
Bill O’Brien is working to build pride and grit in this group. “We talk a lot about that,” he said, driving home how much it matters to represent Boston and the school the right way.
The team’s eager to move on from last year’s baggage. Defensive back Carter Davis summed up the mood: “Anybody who’s coming here, you know that as soon as you step foot on Boston College, everybody is going to look down on us because of what we put on tape last year. Even though we were 2-10, we were in a lot of games. That’s the past.”
Key Additions and Transfers
The Eagles have welcomed several transfers who could make an immediate difference. Among them:
- Anthony Palano – Linebacker from Washington State
- Bodie Kahoun – Linebacker from Notre Dame
- Kris Jones – Defensive end from Georgia
They’re part of a group of 26 transfers, all eager to prove themselves. Davis put it simply: “They’re showing they belong here. They’re coming here to work.”
The Rise of Evan Dickens
One of the most interesting stories is the arrival of running back Evan Dickens from Liberty University. Last season, Dickens put up monster numbers—229 carries, 1,339 yards, and 16 touchdowns.
He’s hoping to match or top those stats now that he’s in the ACC. “I’m looking forward to mimicking or even having a better season this year,” Dickens said. “I’m still hungry, I’m not satisfied, and I’m going to keep climbing.”
Diversifying Skills
Dickens isn’t just focused on running. He wants to become more versatile, working on his receiving and blocking.
With new running backs coach Mike Hart guiding him, Dickens is putting in the work. “I know Coach O’Brien likes to run the ball,” he said. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to take pride in the run game. You’ve got to set the tone for the game.”
Opportunities for Tight Ends
With promising tight end Kaelan Chudzinski out with an Achilles injury, others have a shot to step up. Bryce Lewis, Zeke Moore, Brady Clough, and Danny Edgehille are all in the mix for bigger roles.
Moore has become a leader and could see more passes his way. Lewis, who switched over from the defensive line, is a big target at 6-6, 245 pounds.
“Bryce has done a really good job of picking up the system, knowing how to run routes, understanding the run game and the protections,” O’Brien said. “Very smart guy.”
Improving the Defense
Last season, Boston College’s defense was, frankly, a mess. They gave up the most yards per play (6.5), yards per game (433.3), and touchdowns (48) in the ACC.
To fix that, the team’s brought in key transfers and is laser-focused on defense in camp. Palano, Kahoun, and Jones should give the unit a much-needed boost.
“They’re showing they belong here,” Davis said of the new guys. “They’re coming here to work.”
Injury Management and Team Health
Injuries really hurt the team last year. O’Brien’s not taking chances this time.
He’s easing the team into full-speed work, starting at 60 minutes and gradually ramping up. The idea is to keep everyone healthy for the long haul.
Wide receiver Jaedn Skeete and defensive back Syair Torrence were both back on Day 1, which is a good sign. “There’s nothing more important than the health of the team,” O’Brien said. “From a timing standpoint, we have to make sure we stay on track with that.”
Navigating the Changing NCAA Landscape
O’Brien isn’t a fan of the current chaos in the NCAA landscape. He says the endless drip of new rules has to stop.
Still, he’s not totally against the idea of athletes from the 2022 recruiting class coming back to college football. “Would we be opposed to guys coming back? No, not necessarily,” O’Brien said.
“If the guy wanted to come back, to improve the football team, I mean, yeah. But this trickling out of rules is just crazy.”
Boston College football is gearing up for the new season. The team’s got its eye on bouncing back from past struggles.
