Duke football is gearing up for an exciting 2026 season under head coach Manny Diaz. Spring practice kicks off March 19, and the Blue Devils are eager to put the Darian Mensah controversy behind them.

Former quarterback Darian Mensah transferred to Miami after a legal dispute with Duke. The team faces challenges, but there’s a sense of optimism thanks to new transfers and fresh faces on the roster.

Here’s a look at where Duke football stands now, plus some thoughts on the new roster and what fans might see this year.

The Fallout from the Darian Mensah Lawsuit

Darian Mensah’s exit has been a major storyline for Duke. Duke sued Mensah on January 20 for breaching a multi-year contract by entering the transfer portal, but they settled a week later.

Mensah and wide receiver Cooper Barkate soon landed at Miami. Manny Diaz spoke about the situation on March 17, making it clear the team is ready to move on and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of college football.

Manny Diaz’s Perspective

In his first media appearance after the lawsuit ended, Diaz sounded focused on the road ahead. “It’s been a while, we’ve kind of moved on,” he said.

“The portal is the portal, the window’s the window. … Those are the rules we have right now. I think everyone knows our calendar is a little out of whack. There’s no one in this program that’s going to sit around as a victim, right? We’re excited about what’s next. We’re excited about who we have.”

New Additions to the Roster

To fill the gap left by Mensah, Duke went to the transfer portal and brought in Walker Eget from San Jose State. Eget threw for 5,555 yards and 30 touchdowns as a two-year starter with the Spartans.

The NCAA granted him an extra year of eligibility on February 19. Right now, though, he’s limited this spring because of an ACL tear he suffered in October 2024.

Walker Eget’s Impact

Even with limited spring reps, Eget is making his presence known. “We’re really excited to have Walker join our program,” Diaz said.

“He’s just doing light throwing right now, but he’s able to stand behind the offense and set protections, take reps, just learning the scheme, sitting in all the meetings, of course.” Eget’s experience means a lot to a Duke quarterback room that hasn’t seen much game action before.

Strengthening the Quarterback Room

Besides Eget, the quarterback group now features North Alabama transfer Ari Patu, redshirt freshman Dan Mahan, and freshman Terry Walker III. Diaz likes the depth and talent in this group.

He thinks Eget’s experience fills a huge gap for the team.

Other Key Transfers and Freshmen

Walker Eget is just one of 24 new players joining Duke, including transfers and incoming freshmen. This wave of new talent should give the team a boost and extra depth all over the field.

Upcoming Events and Season Opener

Duke fans can mark their calendars for the annual Blue and White game on Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium. It’ll be the first chance to see the new roster in action and get a feel for what’s coming.

The Blue Devils open their season at home against Tulane on September 5. Should be interesting to see how it all comes together.

Building on Past Success

Duke just wrapped up back-to-back nine-win seasons and snagged the 2025 ACC championship. That win marked the program’s eighth title and its first outright conference crown since 1962.

With a solid foundation and some fresh faces, the Blue Devils look hungry to keep the momentum going. Honestly, the energy around the team feels contagious.
