Fanstake: Revolutionizing NIL Deals by Empowering Fans and Athletes Alike

Within the ever-evolving landscape of college athletics, a groundbreaking platform is making waves by offering both fans and athletes unprecedented influence over the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) market. Fanstake, a fan-driven NIL platform, is rewriting the rules by fostering engagement, transparency, and equality in athlete compensation.

Launched by a passionate coalition of fans, former athletes, and investors, Fanstake stands out as a pioneering NIL solution, emphasizing fan engagement in athlete recruitment and retention. Unlike traditional models where athletes strike deals with brands and entities behind closed doors, Fanstake invites the fan community directly into the equation to “stake” financial support for promising recruits, transfers, or current athletes.

This unique model ensures that athlete endorsement deals reflect true market values, supported significantly by the sports community. The platform’s declaration is straightforward: empower fans to shape their teams while athletes earn what their talent is genuinely worth.

Cementing its Position

Fanstake debuted to high expectations, having secured $3 million in a pre-seed funding round led by prominent investment firms Susa Ventures and Will Ventures. This financial backing exemplifies significant confidence in the platform’s potential to alter the status quo in college sports.

At the helm is Greg Glass, CEO and Co-Founder, who articulates a vision of equality and market transparency. “We created Fanstake because we believe engaging in the open market is the most effective way to create a fair environment in college sports,” Glass asserts. The company aims to democratize the playing field by enabling smaller schools to compete effectively with powerhouse programs through grassroots financial backing.

Fan Engagement: A Year-Round Mission

Fanstake’s platform is engineered to maintain fan involvement well beyond the seasonal high points of traditional collegiate sports. By opening engagement across various sports, from college football to men’s basketball and women’s basketball and beyond, Fanstake capitalizes on the cyclical nature of athletics, ensuring there’s always a sport in focus.

The model encourages fans to support athletes long before they ever step onto the college field, fostering a continuous cycle of interest and investment. This year-round engagement model is further bolstered by ongoing initiatives and promotions, such as the “Million Dollar Match,” offering up to $1 million in matching funds to encourage fan participation from the outset.

Navigating Future Trajectories

In an environment where the NIL landscape is subject to rapid legal and cultural changes, Fanstake is well-positioned to adapt and thrive. The NCAA House Settlement and potential regulatory shifts underline the necessity for platforms that offer clarity and value assessment for athletes as they navigate their careers.

The company’s commitment to partnerships with like-minded startups underscores its adaptive strategy. Although specific collaborations remain under wraps, these relationships are expected to further expand athlete opportunities and enrich the fan experience on the Fanstake platform.

Championing Athlete Empowerment

Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of Fanstake is its athlete-centric ethos. Athletes who have engaged with Fanstake express enthusiasm for a model that benefits not only themselves but also their teammates. High-profile players show interest in extending opportunities to less-recognized colleagues, highlighting a communal spirit that Fanstake is eager to support and promote.

By creating pathways for athletes to engage directly with multiple fan bases, Fanstake offers opportunities to enhance personal brands and capitalize on market transparency, fostering a spirit of empowerment throughout the college sports community.

Q&A With Co-Founder and CEO Greg Glass:

Question: What feedback have you received from athletes when you’ve pitched the platform?

Answer: “The response from athletes has been incredible – the truth is it’s all upside for them, so this wasn’t entirely surprising, but there are a couple of things we learned that were fascinating. First off, athletes are hyper-aware right now that they have a finite period of time to maximize their NIL opportunities, so they’re eager to participate in any way they can.

The second, more surprising thing came from high-profile athletes who already have a lot of NIL deals. They’re almost more interested in opportunities for their teammates than themselves, and they’ve directly asked if they could promote others who are going under the radar. We’ve loved to see this, and have built-in mechanisms to ensure all can participate in the upside here.”

Question: How do you plan to keep fans engaged and motivated to continue staking on athletes, especially during off-seasons?

Answer: “Recruiting has become a year-round focus these days, and college sports fans are well aware that the off-season for the top sports can have a massive impact on building winning programs. That said, Fanstake’s mission is to expand to all sports, and so the off-season for one sport is the on-season for another.

Whether it’s baseball, hockey, volleyball, soccer, etc. – there are smaller, dedicated fanbases for all of these sports around the country. So, we’re confident that there is already a healthy level of enthusiasm and interest that will keep fans engaged year-round. That said, we are always going to be looking for ways to engage with fans more actively, make it fun, and empower them in the process year-round, and there’s more we’ll be announcing on that when the time is right.”

Question: Are you currently exploring or planning any partnerships with other college-focused startups? If so, can you share some details about these potential collaborations?

Answer: “Absolutely, we’re actively exploring partnerships that align with our mission to expand athlete opportunities and empower college sports fans everywhere, and there’s a lot of great stuff in the works. While we can’t disclose specific details yet, we look forward to sharing those updates soon.”

Looking to the Future

As Fanstake continues to grow, its innovative approach has the potential to reshape how athletes, fans, and educational institutions interact in the NIL marketplace. Positioned at the intersection of passion, technology, and opportunity, Fanstake embodies a transformative vision where every stakeholder—from fans to athletes—has a voice and a vested interest in college athletics’ future.

Fanstake is not just a player in the NIL market; it represents a movement poised to redefine college sports engagement and valuation for generations to come.
