Baseball America just dropped its June edition of the Top 100 MLB Prospect rankings, and New York Mets fans have a lot to chew on. The latest list features familiar faces like Jett Williams and Nolan McLean, but now Jonah Tong and Ronny Mauricio join the mix.

Let’s take a closer look at what these guys have been up to, and what it could mean for the Mets’ future. If you want to dig into the full update, you can check it out here.

Jett Williams: Rising Star

Jett Williams is a 21-year-old infielder who’s hung around Baseball America’s Top 100 for a while now. Even though he lost some time to injury in 2024, Williams bounced back and kept producing.

His OPS dipped a bit from .863 in April to .830 in May. But his OBP actually jumped from .355 to .398, which is a nice sign that he’s learning at the plate.

So far this season, he’s hitting .266/.370/.443 with an OPS of .813. He’s already swiped 17 bases.

Williams doesn’t stick to just one spot defensively. He’s played 33 games at shortstop, six in center field, and even got a start at second base.

Offensive Performance

Williams puts up numbers that make you pay attention. He finds ways to get on base and then makes pitchers nervous with his speed.

That jump in OBP from April to May shows he’s getting more selective, which is always good to see in a young hitter.

Defensive Versatility

He’s handled a bunch of different positions, which gives the Mets some flexibility down the line. It’s never bad to have options, right?

Nolan McLean: The Pitching Prodigy

Nolan McLean is a 23-year-old righty who’s been climbing the rankings, especially after moving up to Triple-A Syracuse. He’s thrown 27 1/3 innings in the International League and put up a 2.63 ERA with a 1.207 WHIP.

That league is usually pretty tough on pitchers, so those numbers stand out. McLean’s making a real case for himself as a future rotation piece.

Triple-A Success

McLean didn’t seem fazed by the jump to Triple-A at all. Keeping that ERA and WHIP low in such a hitter-friendly league is pretty impressive, honestly.

Key Stats

  • ERA: 2.63
  • WHIP: 1.207
  • Innings Pitched: 27 1/3

New Entrants: Jonah Tong and Ronny Mauricio

The June update brought two new Mets into the Top 100: Jonah Tong and Ronny Mauricio. Both have been turning heads lately, and it’s about time they got some recognition.

Jonah Tong: Dominating Double-A

Jonah Tong, just 21, has been lights out in Double-A Binghamton. In May, he put up a 1.35 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP, fanning 42 hitters in 26 innings.

For the season, he’s got a 2.25 ERA, 1.068 WHIP, and an eye-popping 14.7 K/9 over 44 innings. He even snagged back-to-back Eastern League Pitcher of the Week awards.

Key Stats

  • ERA: 1.35 (May), 2.25 (Season)
  • WHIP: 0.90 (May), 1.068 (Season)
  • Strikeouts: 42 (May), 14.7 K/9 (Season)

Ronny Mauricio: A Triumphant Return

Ronny Mauricio missed all of 2024 with a torn ACL, but now at 24, he’s tearing it up in Triple-A Syracuse. In just nine games, he’s slashing .515/.564/.818/1.382—yeah, those numbers are real.

He got the call to the majors to cover for the injured Mark Vientos. Mauricio’s walked as much as he’s struck out and already swiped four bags, which is wild for such a short sample.

Notable Omissions: Jesus Baez and Brandon Sproat

Of course, not everyone made the cut this time. Jesus Baez and Brandon Sproat both dropped out of the Top 100.

Jesus Baez: A Rollercoaster Season

Baez slipped off the list after a rough April, but he actually rebounded in May. He hit .341/.456/.537/.993 in 103 plate appearances and even picked up South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors.

Still, those early struggles were enough to knock him out of the rankings, at least for now.

Brandon Sproat: Continued Struggles

Brandon Sproat’s season hasn’t been pretty. After a so-so April, things got rougher in May—he put up a 6.56 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP over 23 1/3 innings.

He’s not missing bats at Triple-A, with his K/9 dropping to 6.6 in 75 innings, way down from the 11+ K/9 he posted in 2024. That’s a trend the Mets are probably watching closely.

Conclusion

The June update of Baseball America’s Top 100 MLB Prospect rankings has a bit of everything for Mets fans. Jett Williams and Nolan McLean keep turning heads with their performances.

It’s also pretty exciting to see Jonah Tong and Ronny Mauricio joining the list. Both guys have some real potential, and it’s hard not to feel a little hopeful about what’s ahead for the Mets.

But then, there’s the flip side. Jesus Baez and Brandon Sproat have had a rough stretch, which just goes to show how unpredictable the journey can be for young players.
