The Tennessee Volunteers football team will face a tough start to their 2026 season with a true road game against Georgia Tech. After opening at home against Furman, the Vols head to Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta on September 12 for a night game against the Yellow Jackets.
This matchup launches a home-and-home series and will air on ESPN at 7 p.m. The series came together quickly after Nebraska canceled their planned games with Tennessee, showing how fast both athletic departments can work when needed.
Georgia Tech, led by new athletic director Ryan Alpert, decided to host the game on campus. He wanted to keep tradition alive and give students a real college football experience.
Early Season Challenges for Tennessee
Tennessee will kick off 2026 with a home game against Furman at Neyland Stadium. But the real test comes the next week, when they face Georgia Tech in a night game at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
This game starts a home-and-home series, with the Yellow Jackets set to visit Knoxville in 2027. The SEC confirmed ESPN will televise the game at 7 p.m.
Quick Scheduling Turnaround
Tennessee’s athletic director, Danny White, moved fast to secure this series after Nebraska backed out. White thanked Georgia Tech’s athletic director, J Batt, for making schedule changes to make this happen.
“After Nebraska canceled the series, our main focus was to secure another home-and-home matchup with an opponent from a Power Four conference, which seemed improbable at the time,” White said. They finalized the series in April 2025, less than a year after Nebraska’s cancellation.
Georgia Tech’s Decision to Host On-Campus
Georgia Tech’s new athletic director, Ryan Alpert, chose Bobby Dodd Stadium over the NFL’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium for this game. “We’re very grateful to all the Georgia Tech fans that provided their input as we considered the options for our 2026 home football schedule and season tickets,” Alpert said.
He wanted to honor traditions and give fans what they wanted. Playing on campus brings more energy and a deeper sense of history.
Georgia Tech’s Recent Performance
Under head coach Brent Key, Georgia Tech has improved a lot. In 2025, the Yellow Jackets finished 9-4 and landed at No. 24 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.
The team started 8-0, including a win against then-No. 12 Clemson. But they stumbled late, dropping three of their last four games and losing the Pop-Tarts Bowl to BYU.
Coaching and Player Changes
Brent Key took over as head coach in 2022 and now has a 27-20 overall record, with a 20-11 mark in ACC play. The Yellow Jackets have upset seven ranked teams with him at the helm.
In 2026, Georgia Tech will replace veteran quarterback Haynes King with Alberto Mendoza, an Indiana transfer and younger brother of NFL Draft No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza. The staff will also feature new coordinators: George Godsey on offense and Jason Semore on defense.
Historical Context and Rivalry
Tennessee and Georgia Tech go way back, with Tennessee holding a 25-17-2 edge in the series. Georgia Tech helped found the SEC and played there from 1933 to 1963 before going Independent, then joining the ACC in 1983.
The two teams met yearly between 1954 and 1973, and again from 1979 to 1987. Their last meeting was in 2017, when Tennessee won a wild double-overtime game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Recent Success Against ACC Opponents
Tennessee has done well against ACC teams lately, winning their last five games. Those wins came against Pittsburgh, Clemson, Virginia, NC State, and Syracuse.
This success adds some extra spice to the upcoming showdown with Georgia Tech.

Tennessee’s baseball team is also making waves. The Volunteers will play in the Chapel Hill Regional of the 2026 NCAA Baseball Tournament.
