Projecting the future of college football programs? It’s never been simple. Rosters shift, coaches come and go, and the transfer portal keeps everyone guessing.

Adam Rittenberg, a longtime college football reporter, just dropped his latest Future Power Rankings. He breaks down how every Power 4 team stacks up through the 2027 season. Rittenberg digs into roster management, quarterback situations, line play, star power, and coaching staff. Let’s take a look at some of his insights and projections for a few notable teams.

Quarterback Situation

The quarterback spot is always at the center of any college football conversation. Teams with experienced starters—or who can snag top talent from the portal—usually have an edge.

Boston College

Boston College had a rough 2-10 season and needed a reboot. They brought in Mason McKenzie, a Division II standout from Saginaw Valley State, who ran for 942 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.

The Eagles also added Arkansas transfer Grayson Wilson. Two promising quarterbacks joined their latest recruiting class, so competition should be lively.

Purdue

Ryan Browne returns for Purdue after throwing for 2,153 yards last fall. He struggled with interceptions, but he’s still the main guy. There’s not much depth behind him right now.

Stanford

Stanford’s quarterback situation is a bit unsettled. Ben Gulbranson and Elijah Brown are gone, so Michigan transfer Davis Warren, who started most of 2024, probably gets first crack.

Dylan Rizk from UCF is also in the mix, so things could change quickly.

Offensive Line/Defensive Line Outlook

Line play matters—a lot. Controlling the line of scrimmage can swing close games and playoff chances.

Boston College

Boston College’s defensive line looks solid with KJ Sampson, Kris Jones, and Demetrius Ballard, all with multiple years left to play. On offense, senior guard Kristian Phillips (from Michigan State) and Reggie Jackson (from Jacksonville State) bring experience.

Purdue

Purdue’s offensive line is basically starting over under new coach Zach Crabtree. They lost key players to the portal but picked up depth from both USCs—Southern California and South Carolina.

The defensive front feels steady with veterans Ian Jeffries and CJ Madden. Transfers like Georgia edge Elo Modozie and Illinois tackle Curt Neal should help, too.

Stanford

Stanford gets tackles Niki Prongos and Kahlil House back. Harvard transfer Aidan Kilstrom is expected to play a big role.

The defensive line is young but has promise, especially with Zach Rowell and Braden Marceau-Olayinka emerging.

Roster Management

Managing a college football roster isn’t just about recruiting high school talent anymore. The transfer portal has changed everything, and keeping key players is just as important as adding new ones.

Boston College

Coach Bill O’Brien wants to lean less on transfers, but the offseason was busy. The Eagles lost some big names to other Power 4 teams but managed to land talent at key spots, including running back Evan Dickens and quarterback Mason McKenzie.

Purdue

Purdue’s roster turnover before coach Barry Odom’s second season wasn’t as wild as last year. They brought in 29 new players and lost 20, focusing on both lines and adding playmakers like running back Fame Ijeboi and wide receivers Xavier Townsend and Asaad Waseem.

Stanford

Stanford’s new staff is still figuring things out. They added six transfers, including quarterback Davis Warren and Aidan Kilstrom from Harvard.

High school recruiting looks promising, too—top-50 national recruit Zion Robinson is on board.

Star Power

Having a few stars can change everything. All-Americans and national award contenders lift a team’s profile and often its win total.

Boston College

Boston College’s defense leans on KP Price, who racked up 94 tackles last year. Liberty transfer Evan Dickens, the nation’s No. 9 rusher in 2025, boosts the offense.

Purdue

Purdue’s top guys include linebacker Charles Correa, who led with 7.5 tackles for loss. Florida International transfer Mister Clark, a first-team All-Conference USA defensive back, joins the secondary.

Stanford

Stanford brings back linebacker Matt Rose, a second-team All-ACC pick. Safety Jay Green led the team in passes defended and should be a difference-maker again.

Coaching Staff

The coaching staff can make or break a program. New faces and changes in leadership often mean new philosophies and strategies.

Boston College

Bill O’Brien heads into his third season with some fresh assistants. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof brings experience, and offensive coaches Joe Dailey and Kurt Anderson are new to the staff.

Purdue

Purdue’s defense gets a reset with Kevin Kane returning as coordinator. Offensive line coach Zach Crabtree, who’s worked under Boilers OC Josh Henson before, is also new.

Stanford

Stanford’s coaching staff welcomes back former quarterback and offensive coordinator Tavita Pritchard. General manager Andrew Luck also returns to the fold.

Kris Richard joins as defensive coordinator. Brian Lindgren steps in to coach the quarterbacks, bringing a fresh perspective.
